Preparing your cat before you leave: a low-stress checklist
Food, litter, hiding places and instructions: the details that help your cat keep their bearings while you are away.
A cat knows every detail of their territory. When you leave, the kindest preparation is often to change as little as possible.
Write down the everyday routine
Note meal times, portions, where supplies are stored and the small preferences only you know. Include favourite hiding places too: not seeing a cat does not necessarily mean something is wrong.
Litter, water and the home
- Leave enough litter and food for the entire stay, plus a little extra.
- Offer several water points if your cat does not drink much.
- Put away strings, bags and potentially harmful plants.
- Keep the travel carrier accessible in case of an emergency.
Health information
Gather your vet’s details, health record and any treatment instructions. If medication is needed, demonstrate the routine during the first meeting.
